Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire, a quiet community situated in the West Island of Montreal is what you might call a "sleepy" location. Many people unfamiliar with the word often think that it's a separate island somewhere west of Montreal but in fact it's a part of the city that's west. West Island is home to everything from Lachine west to the city of Lachine west. Amanda Brugel's birthplace is frequently mentioned, but her brief visit to the West Island wasn't. Brugel developed on Courtice just outside Oshawa in Ontario. She had a dream to become a dancer, but an increase in her height led to her growing beyond the dancers she was with. In a recent interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I am 6 feet, 1 inch." As I grew older than my male friends, I quit. Former dancers often turn to acting and in the case of Brugel it was an urging from her teacher in drama. The teacher encouraged her to audition for a part in a school production. The teacher who suggested she go after a role in the school's annual production. The Fine Arts Talent Scholarship led her to York University, where she studied Theatre and received an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts in 2000. In the last 20 years, Brugel's roles on TV and the big screen have been varied. The role of Rita in the award-winning series The Handmaid's Tale was her most notable. Brugel is the sole Canadian in the season 1 cast of the show and seen only occasionally, was the only Canadian.
